December’s Birthstone -Tanzanite

Tanzanite is a birthstone for December, along with two other blue gems; Turquoise and Zircon.

Tanzanite is one of three gemstones which have added to the birthstone list since it was created in 1912 by the American Gem Trade Association. This late edition to this list is because tanzanite was only discovered in 1967, and never had a chance to be included in the official birthstone list, which was created in 1912. Tanzanite was added in 2002 as it is now the most popular blue gemstone in the western world after sapphire. Additionally it is commonly used in fine jewelry, unlike zircon and turquoise which it shares its Decembers birthstone status with.

“At certain moments in history, when there is a strong call from gem enthusiasts to expand the list of official birthstones, Jewelers of America believes in recognizing the importance of historically significant gemstones and giving gemstone lovers a choice that suits their preferences”

–  JA President and CEO David Bonaparte

The list was first updated in 1952 to add alexandrite, citrine, tourmaline and zircon as birthstones , in 2002 when tanzanite was added for December birthdays, and again in 2016 when spinel was added as the birthstone for August.
